AUSCHWITZ 70 YEARS ON
Auschwitz 70th anniversary
Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland
Auschwitz concentration camp was a network of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It covered over 40 square km and I doubt there is anyone on the planet who has not heard of this place.
The museum which has been made from some areas that are still standing - as the buildings were not built to last 70 years as the Nazis assumed they would be finnished within just a short time period, has long struggled to find funding for its upkeep, though the the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation recently said it had almost reached its goal of raising an endowment of more than $150m (£100m).
On the eve of the anniversary, ( January 27th 2015 ) German Chancellor Angela Merkel drew attention to discrimination against Jews in contemporary Europe, saying it was a "disgrace" that Jews faced insults, threats and violence in Germany. "We've got to fight anti-Semitism and all racism from the outset," she said at a memorial event in Berlin. "We've got to constantly be on guard to protect our freedom, democracy and rule of law."
Eighty-eight thousand deaths a year?
