The article below may be concerned with the USA but the fIgures are global and the huge price hikes affect us here in the UK as they do everyone, everywhere, and this blatant theft and immoral business practice has got to be brought to peoples attention so they know the price hikes in petrol as well as gas and electricity are not because of shortage of supply or anything else, it is pure and simple

The latest round of oil industry quarterly profits is trickling in. Once again, the oil industry is posting multi-billion dollar profits — much of that thanks to the high price that consumers are paying at the gas pump. Shell Oil saw an 11 percent jump in profits over this time last year, raking in $7.7 billion in just three months.

Their profits for the first quarter of 2012 are expected be more than $21 billion — nearly $10 million every hour in pure profit. Over the last decade, the oil industry has made more than $1 trillion. In the last year alone, the largest oil companies took home more than $137 billion in profits. Every time the price at the pump ticks up just a penny, another $200 million flows into the oil industry coffers.

These latest profits come on the heels of a vote in the Senate to repeal some of the tax breaks that the most profitable oil companies receive. These unnecessary tax breaks come at the expense of American taxpayers, who fund the subsidies and still pay at the pump. While a majority of the Senate voted to eliminate the tax breaks, the bill needed 60 votes — so the oil companies win again.

Perhaps it isn’t surprising that the oil and gas industry has already given nearly $4 million to electoral campaigns in 2012 alone. That’s less than an hour of work to guarantee that their sweetheart tax breaks stay in place — not a bad return on investment. And it keeps paying off — there are several bills in Congress that hand over more land to the oil industry, including places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Despite their push to drill in the arctic tundra, though, oil companies are sitting on millions of acres of land they aren’t even using. Of the more than 38 million acres of federal lands leased out to the oil industry, more than 26 million acres are sitting idle. That’s an area the size of Ohio locked up by the oil industry, and not doing anything. On top of that, there are more than 7,000 drilling permits also going unused. For an industry that wants more, more, more, they certainly aren’t using what we’ve already given them.

While they’re hoarding land and permits, they aren’t shy about shipping the final product overseas. For the first time since the 1950s, we’re exporting more gasoline than we’re importing. This means that rather than keeping gasoline here in America and lowering the price for consumers, they’re selling it overseas for higher profits.

The oil industry clearly has its priority: profits. And they are doing good job getting them. But it is also clear that they don’t have the interests of American consumers, American lands and communities in mind. It’s time to stop coddling the oil industry, cut their subsidies, and quit handing them land and permits that they don’t need. It’s time to give the American people a break.



 


Be very selective what you believe when you read about how people like BP behave, as this giant company causes HUGE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE and pays lip service when it comes to cleaning it up and paying compensation.  The oil giants do not care for the planet,  other than they enjoy raping it for everything they can plunder  and in their wake leave horrendous damage and destruction.  Financially screwing the people in this manner - which we have all known for a long time and yet no government seems able or capable of stopping the theft and destruction of millions of peoples lives -  and suck up to the oil and gas giants like puppy dogs - rolling over and completely surrendering to the mighty power of some anonymous asshole with a multi million pay cheque each year and it is faceless people like this that destroy our economy,  put millions globally out of work,  cause scores of business' to close and millions suffer... and all because of power and money.
TYhese are the peoll,e the government then give HUGE tax incentives to and we - the little people,  are again screwed as we have to pay the tax - and once again the 99% are paying for the 1% who are already richer than God and we - the people - suffer - and no one does anything.

 

 


John: I read your web site weekly and am always amazed and thrilled at your passion and interest in such a wide and varied mixture of articles and editorials. It is so rewarding to see someone who is motivated and takes an interest instead of all the shallow empty people that complain but know nothing and will do nothing.  I just wish you were more local to me as living in Seattle USA I find there is nothing like your venue here and not many people are as worldly and as experienced as you and I really love that about you.  Keep up the opinions and the articles and know that - at least once if not more every single week,  I will spend at least 2 - 3 hours finding new things to read and new stuff and truly admire you for what you do and the time it must take.  Richard in Seattle.

John: Read your article on the oil companies and the lack of tax paid and I showed it to others who know I go on about this kind of thing a lot but who disbelieve or turn away when I talk and now they have seen someone else who sees things on a similar level to me and that I am not alone. Thanks for that, as it is hard when I have felt the only one with any interest in what is going on and where my friends and family have knicknamed me 'Conspiracy Colin' because of all the hidden things I talk about but which you are open and clear about.  Thanks for that John.  Keep it up.

I was originally living in New Orleans but since Bush allowed that area  to be so destroyed, I moved initially in with family in California and now live and work in Oakland California. There is a long and painful story in that drama as well, but I shall not go into how the government abused and mistreated us all when they shipped us all out of the city before and after the storms. )
