Latest alcohol data brings sad news

You may have seen news about deaths from alcohol last week. Just as we feared and predicted, new data showed that deaths due to alcohol increased significantly in 2021. This is the second year in a row that deaths have been at record high levels. Since 2019, deaths from alcohol have increased by 27.4%. This harm is not felt equally across society either: men are twice as likely to die from alcohol than women, and there are big regional inequalities. Our Chair Sir Ian Gilmore commented in the media: “It is a national tragedy that the number of deaths caused by alcohol has increased once again across the UK, with every life lost leaving behind a devastating impact on families, friends, and communities.” “COVID-19 saw the number of alcohol deaths increase sharply across the UK, and the continuation of this upward trend in today’s figures should raise alarm bells in Westminster. “ It is clear that we have to keep pressure on the Government and make sure that these figures do not go unnoticed in Westminster. You can click here to urge your MP to support our call for a review on alcohol harm.

You can also read a great breakdown and analysis of the data here.

We are grateful for your continued support! Best wishes, Anu If you are worried about your own or someone else’s drinking, there is help available to you. Drinkline is the national alcohol helpline. John Bellamy Comments:

If you remember back to a few weeks ago and my report about the alcoholic guest at Hamilton Hall who died here, strangulation with his own arm as he was so drunk he fell and twisted around and so suffocated and we - while keeping an eye on him, were not there at that precise time and it was booze that really destroyed his life and eventually killed him.

It doesn't take a genius to appreciate that alcohol use will go up during Lockdown as people are stuck at home - and it is so tempting when there is no work in the morning - and little to do, but have a tipple or two and relax. I am not a drinker but did enjoy a couple of drinks with Gary in the evenings and although it only takes one to get me tiddly, as I am not use to booze, it felt nice and I can completely appreciate why people take the most used drug in the world... alcohol - to relieve the boredom.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THOUGH - THIS IS ANOTHER DEADLY DRUG -

FAR MORE DEADLY THAN ALL THE ILLEGAL DRUGS OPUT TOGETHER

With so much going on in the world besides Brexit / Covid / Trump / Boris / Monkey Virus / Avian Flu / Winter approaching / Threats in the media about what will happen now they have changed the Highway Code and every day in the media are new warnings about driving in the wrong shoes / wearing a big coat while driving - etc. and how it could lead to a £5,000 fine and - all the fucking time - the media is full of threats and warnings and all this is designed to keep us living in fear as then - we are more controllable.

Alcohol is the worst drug available and is socially acceptable while destroying tens of thousands of peoples lives every year and all taxable and legit.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY AND NEVER AROUND CHILDREN
