Trump reportedly lost his mind after Rachel Maddow laid out, in plain language, just how deeply unpopular he really is with the American public. And honestly, it’s hard to argue with her assessment.
By any reasonable measure, Trump isn’t just unpopular he’s historically unpopular. Maddow broke it down on her show in a way that was blunt, a little darkly funny, and hard to ignore. She pointed out that his approval ratings aren’t just low; they’ve collapsed, especially among independents. In her words, they didn’t just fall through the floor they kept going, straight into the basement and then through that floor too. It was her way of saying the obvious: the country has turned on him in a serious, measurable way.
But she didn’t stop at polling numbers. What really mattered, she argued, is what’s happening outside the charts and graphs. People aren’t just telling pollsters they disapprove of Trump they’re showing it in the streets. Over and over again. In large numbers. Across different cities and communities. For months at a time. And, importantly, in ways that have been overwhelmingly nonviolent.
Maddow made the case that this kind of sustained protest is something Trump and his administration genuinely don’t know how to deal with. According to her, the closest thing Trump has to a strategy is pretending the protests aren’t even happening. And that, by itself, says a lot. These demonstrations aren’t fringe or fading away. They’re growing, pulling in new people, and staying powerfully visible.
She also pointed out something that often gets overlooked: these protests are popular. They aren’t being seen as reckless or extreme by most Americans. They’re widely viewed as morally justified and aligned with basic American values. That’s why they keep expanding. When people feel they’re on the right side of history, they show up again and bring others with them.
One of her strongest lines was about how political scientists think about resistance to authoritarian leaders. In simple terms, mass public opposition is the closest thing there is to “magic” when it comes to stopping a would-be despot. Not violence. Not strongman theatrics. Just large numbers of ordinary people refusing to go along quietly.
It’s hard not to agree with her larger point. Whatever people’s other political disagreements might be, this moment is bigger than party labels. If democracy and basic national dignity mean anything, then this is exactly the time to act like it.
We didn’t make it nearly 250 years as a free country just to hand it all over to a delusional strongman with a fragile ego. Standing together, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient, is the bare minimum. And right now, it may be the most powerful tool people actually have.

Created by the Heritage Foundation before the 2024 election, its goals have informed a significant number of Donald Trump's priorities. The new report, "Saving America by Saving the Family," focuses on boosting pregnancy and birth rates, and promoting 'traditional' heterosexual married couples with a male breadwinner. Its suggestions include: making divorce much more difficult, restricting the amounts paid for alimony, discouraging in-vitro fertilization (IVF) as well as online dating, and of course, the creation of marriage bootcamps.Under the Heritage Foundation's vision, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would run the camps. The report itself specifies: "Successful completion of the program would mean that couples are ready to walk down the aisle at a communal wedding by the end of the bootcamp." If you think all of this is too far-fetched and too unrealistic, remember how successful the Heritage Foundation has been so far at getting its anti-immigrant, transphobic, misogynistic policies enacted. But — the public has been successful, too. The Heritage Foundation has backed down from other outrageous proposals in the past — and with enough public outrage, we can get them to retreat on this one, too.We don't need the federal government involving itself in our personal, private, intimate lives. I’m so glad I’m 75 and not 25. When I grew up, we hoped the new world order would avoid future wars. How wrong we were! That fucking cunt Trump, along with Putin, Netanyahu, Modi and the other fuckers seem totally intent on dragging us all to oblivion. Orwell wrote ‘1984’ as fiction, but I fear these fucking international war mongers are now using it as an instructional text. I just hope the end comes quickly and we do not have a long drawn out death.
