Born in Mexico and raised in a strict old-colony Mennonite family after immigrating from Canada, Peter Enns spent his life striving to be the man hisfaith and comunity expected him to be. Over the years he moved from old colony to evangelical and pentecostal circles, always searching for truth, belonging and peace. But behind the faithful image was a truth he could not speak.
The Day The Damn Burst is a deeply personal and ultimately hopeful story of amanwho, after 65 years of silence found the courage to live hoestly and love without fear. Through faith and doubt shame and grace, Peter's journey reveals how authenticity can heal what repression once broke - and how it is never too late to be free.
I get sent tons of stuff, always have, from people sharing their life journey and to be honest, once you have read one persons ' coming out' story - you have read them all. Nothing special. Nothing out of the ordinary I have heard a thousand times before. Married with kids - Coming out late in life as gay - The hassles involved / or / Coming out as gay young and family rejection etc.
Heard it all before.
Peter Enns book is different to the usual and shares a very different story through the innner belief in God and the guilt, the fear, the persecution and how the Bible says this and that about homosexuality and religion can really mess up a persons whole life and yet - there is not one piece of evidence that these books we build and base our very existance around - is even vaguely true or accurate.
FAITH means complete trust, confidence, or belief in someone, something, or a set of religious teachings without needing absolute proof.
I have faith in God ( but not this man made image of what is called God at all, as that's a man made construct ) as I have faith the sun will rise in the morning and I have faith in many things that formulate and support me in my daily life and faith in a God figure is not needed at all as - God doesn't actually want your adoration and especially - God DOES NOT WANT YOUR BLIND BELIEF - YOUR BLIND FATH - and encourages asking questions and NEVER EVER JUST BLINDLY FOLLOW AND BLINDLY BELIEVE without asking questions and NEVER STOP ASKING AND DOUBTING.
Many are raised with the Christian concept that 'God hates you' - and with this absolute clap trap, no wonder so many in the LGBT community are screwed up and have mental health problems as from birth they are told they are not good enough and if LGBT - that God hates you - which is ABSOLUTE COBBLERS.
Peter Enns found his way through the quagmire and this book is the end result
As Peter says - ' I dont regret the years I spent trying to be someone else. Those years forged me, and made me sensitive to the hidden struggles of others. But I am deeply grateful that I have lived long enough to step into my true self with honesty and pride.'
A good read and an interesting side of gay ' coming out' through adverstity and struggles.
