Once upon a time, a king decided to feed kheer (sweet rice pudding) to 100 blind people every day.

One day, a snake dipped its head into the milk being used for the kheer and released its venom into it.

All 100 blind people died after eating the poisoned kheer. The king was deeply distressed, fearing he would bear the sin of killing 100 men. In his anguish, he left his kingdom and set out for the forest to engage in devotion and seek atonement for this sin. Along the way, he came across a village.

The king asked the people gathered at the village square if there was a devout family in the village where he could spend the night. The villagers told him about a brother and sister who were very pious and devoted to worship. The king stayed at their home for the night.

When the king woke up in the morning, the girl was still engaged in prayer. Usually, it was her routine to finish her prayers before dawn and prepare breakfast.

But that day, she remained in prayer for a long time. When she finally rose, her brother remarked, "Sister, you have finished so late today. We have a traveler staying with us who needs to have breakfast and continue on a long journey."

The girl replied, "Brother, there was a complicated matter being deliberated upon 'above' (in the divine realm). Dharmaraj (the Lord of Justice) had to make a decision regarding a complex situation, and I stayed back to hear the verdict. That is why I remained in meditation for so long."

Her brother asked, "What was the matter?"

The girl explained, "A certain king used to feed kheer to blind people. However, 100 blind people died because a snake had released venom into the milk. Now, Dharmaraj is unable to decide who should bear the sin for their deaths: the king, the snake, or the cook who left the milk uncovered."

The king was listening to this conversation. Hearing something that concerned him directly, he became interested and asked the girl, "So, what was the decision?"

The girl replied, "No decision has been reached yet."

So, the king asked if he could stay at their home for one more night. Both the sister and brother happily agreed.

The king stayed on for the next day, but the people gathered at the village chaupal (community meeting place) spent the entire day discussing him. They remarked that the man who had arrived the previous day—seeking a home where a devout person lived—had now revealed the true nature of his "devotion."

They speculated that he had not left after the first night because his intentions had turned impure upon seeing the young woman; he was now determined to either stay permanently at her house or run away with her.

Throughout the day, the king was the subject of harsh criticism at the chaupal.

The next morning, the girl sat in meditation again and rose at her usual time. The king asked, "Daughter, who incurred the sin of killing the blind men?"

The girl replied, "That sin was shared among and taken up by the people sitting at our village chaupal."

The Moral:~ How disadvantageous it is to engage in slander! A slanderer always shoulders the sins of others and suffers the consequences of the sinful deeds committed by them. Therefore, we should always refrain from slander.
