To the person who wrote this question. No one expects you to speak British English dear, after all, you are American !
It’s not about anyone not liking the way you speak American English, that is up to you. It’s about the way people like you, think you have a right to criticize how the British people speak their own language, AND, just to educate you in case you are unaware - The Country of England in Britain, was the place of origin of fhe British English language now spoken throughout the British empire and the rest of the world.
JB ADDS - English is the most spoken language globally by total speakers (around 1.5 billion), while Mandarin Chinese has the most native speakers (over 900 million), followed by Hindi and Spanish; these rankings shift slightly depending on whether total or first-language speakers are counted, but English, Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish, French, and Arabic consistently lead the lists. No where on any list I can find does it itemise American English as an actual language.
These countries adapted it to suit their own way of speaking it.
Now, we have many dialects of British English throughout Britain and the rest of the world. All the American version is, is a bastardised version of the original correct version spoken here in Britain, and for some reason, that upsets you !
( Ah bless...)
We were speaking English centuries before your version of our English was formulated to suit your way of interpreting and speaking the language.
Speak it how you like, but don’t try teaching granny how to suck eggs and say yours is the only correct usage of English and the only way to speak it ! It shows how foolish you are dear.
Get over it ! If you want to speak it how you want to speak it, that’s up to you. We couldn’t care less, as we know better, so carry on deluding yourself, we don’t mind !

And, it has nothing to do with being on an American website…. if that is how you feel, maybe you should stop using this website as it clearly offends you that others use the website also. There are other nationalites who are using this website as well, or didn’t you realise that ? If everyone else had that attitude in America, then you’d limit your knowledge base even more, if everyone moved off it, and you’d end up isolating yourself from the rest of the world and stagnate and your level of knowledge would deminish as you cut yourself off from them.
You are beginning to sound like you are “cutting off your nose to spite your face”! - another English idiom that you will not understand, so here is what it means:-
“The phrase "cutting off your nose to spite your face" means doing something that harms yourself as a way to get back at someone else, without realizing or caring that the self-inflicted harm is greater than any potential harm to the other person. It's essentially a self-destructive overreaction to a problem, often driven by anger or spite.”

English is a global West Germanic language with roots in Anglo-Saxon dialects, evolving through invasions (Vikings, Normans) and extensive borrowing from Latin, French, and other languages, making it the world's most spoken language (over 1.5 billion speakers) and a key lingua franca in business, science, and tech, known for its vast vocabulary and continuous adaptation. ( and all this occured centuries before the USA even existed. )
Key Characteristics & History
Origins: Emerged in early medieval England from Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) and is related to German and Dutch, not Romance languages like French.
Influences: Heavily enriched by Old Norse (Vikings) and Old French (Norman Conquest), adding thousands of words for law, food, and culture.
Global Status: The primary language of international communication, aviation, computing, and diplomacy, learned as a second language by more people than speak it natively.
Vocabulary: Boasts over a million words, a result of its history of absorbing terms from over 350 languages (e.g., Hindi, Native American).
Evolution: Developed through Old English, Middle English (Chaucer), Early Modern English (Shakespeare), and Modern English, constantly adding new words.
British Empire & USA: Colonial expansion and the cultural/economic power of the UK / US spread it globally.
Accessibility: Its adaptability and sheer number of speakers make it a common link between different nationalities.
Digital Age: Technology and social media accelerate the creation and spread of new English term.

If you don't like something, do not read it and move on but do not shy away from what IS going on in the world of which - you are a part. World news is so easy to find these days and differing opinions not hard to find. Having an opinion is vital and being a ' don't care' person helps no one.
