Oh dear…

Americans who say such things really do themselves no favours and just make themselves look even more stupid than we already know them to be. When an American doesn't know where the Panama Canal is - or what country the Great Wall of China is in - sends shivvers down your spine as to how dumb, how backward, the USA's educational system really is.

Le me tell you a little story about the history of your wonderful US of A.

Are you sitting comfortably?

Then I’ll begin…

Once upon a time, in a lush, green kingdom, named America which was across the great blue sea, a magical language was born; This language was woven from many secret tongues—Norman French, Anglo-Saxon, and Latin—making it incredibly rich, complex, and full of beautiful, tricky spells. The people of this kingdom, known as the English, guarded their language proudly.

Then, (about 440 years ago) in 1585, a brave British explorer, named Christopher Columbus, set sail into the unknown on a mission to discover new lands; his ships crashed upon the shores of this vast, wild, and beautiful new land.

A few years later (about 420 years ago) in 1607, the first permanent English settlers arrived in large wooden boats. They brought the magical kingdom's language with them, planting its roots deep into the new soil. For a long time, the people of the new land spoke just like the old kingdom, and then as the centuries passed, the new land grew into a loud, busy, and independent country.

Then (198 years ago) in 1828, a clever man named Noah Webster looked at this magical language and decided it was far too complicated for his busy new countrymen, and so he took his quill like a magic wand began to write a new dictionary (a book of words and their definitions) he had it published in one massive book. With this new American English, he chopped away the silent letters, changing words such as colour to color, theatre to theater, and defence to defense. He simplified the old world's magic so it was easier to master, and that is how the old kingdom's tongue became the speech of the new world!

So you see, America, being younger than the United Kingdom, and discovered by a British explorer, then having English people settle on it, speaks a language which isn’t theirs, but was adapted to make things easier for their poor confused brains. That doesn’t stop them from mispronouncing words or misquoting adages and the like though…
