More than 900 people, many of them children, died in a mass murder-suicide in 1978 by drinking cyanide-laced punch at the order of cult leader Jim Jones.
More than 900 died. A terrible gruesome event. The poison was not quick. It burned the stomach and stole the air. When the cramps hit, the people fell to the dirt. They curled into the earth to vomit and die. Families held each other in the grass. When the heavy pain came, they collapsed forward together.
You see Jim Jones sold a lie. He promised a jungle utopia but built a prison. He was sick with power. He controlled the food and minds of his people. When the congressman came, Jones knew the end was near.
He told his guards to shoot the visitors. Then he called his people to the pavilion. He told them it was time to die.
303 kids were murdered.
They brought out the vat of punch laced with cyanide. They killed the babies first, yes. They shot poison down their throats with syringes. The adults drank from cups.
Cyanide does not give a peaceful sleep. It brings the violent heavy cramps of death. The body twists and vomits. A hard, ugly final thing.
Not all were facedown but most were. The complete true reason is not known. But Some men survived the first hour. They walked among the dead.
They pulled the bodies into neat lines near the radio room. They wanted the slaughter to look like a peaceful sleep.
They hid it.
A man named Stanley Clayton was a lucky one. He saw what was happening. These were not suicide drills. He survived. Somehow managed to trick some guards, ran into the dense jungle.
When people drank the poison, guards took them by the arms. They walked them to the grass and laid them face down. They did this to hide the faces. They hid the agony from the people not dead yet - in the dirt so the crowd would not panic.
