It is actually closer to £190 billion per annum. And with free access to medical care at point of use for everyone from the most insignificant homeless person to the King, should he need it, it's money well spent.
Yes, we pay for it out of our taxes, but so what? It's way cheaper on an individual level than a backwards insurance based model like they have in the USA, with its primitive focus on profit rather than medical care. The proof of the pudding is that we in the UK have a longer life expectancy than Americans. And none of us needs to worry about being made bankrupt as a result of a health scare which we couldn't afford to insure ourselves for.
Global Rankings:
The U.S. system consistently ranks lower in international comparisons of overall health system performance, despite its technological advancements and high spending.
In the Award Winning Michael More Documentary concerning the American Health Care System, called SICKO, he ranked the USA in 38th place in the world - so way below almost all western countries including Cuba, France, the UK and many others.

A couple of quick questions to Google reveal that the annual cost of healthcare per capita in the US is $14,570, while in the UK, it is £4,188, which is $5,627.
So a far more pertinent question would be Why does America's primitive healthcare system cost US citizens $14,570 each, while UK citizens pay $5,627 each for a service which gives them a longer life expectancy than Americans?

The reason is actually quite simple: in Japan they have always driven on the left and there were no external factors that pushed to change this habit.
Going back in time a few centuries we discover that driving on the left was a common habit in all countries. The reason was quite practical: when cars did not yet exist, knights preferred to stay on the left side of the road, which allowed them to draw and use the sword more easily, with the right hand and to strike a blow to the enemy more easily, as they found him on their right. Only in 1872 this custom of knights was also applied to Japanese transport, with the introduction of the first railway line. One factor that contributed to this habit not changing was essentially one: France, the USA and Great Britain offered to help the country build the railway line, but given the deep friendship with the latter, Japan decided to accept the collaboration of the English, and consequently the trains were driven on the left. When trams and cars were introduced, around 1900, it was therefore spontaneous to follow the left-hand drive already in use for trains.
Around 64 countries drive on the left-hand side of the road while the rest of the world drives on the right. In Europe, very few countries drive on the left like we do.
Countries that drive on the left like the UK tend to be those that were part of the British Empire in the past. That includes India, Australia, New Zealand and former British colonies in Africa and the Caribbean.
