In April, a St. Petersburg court ruled in favor of the Justice Ministry’s decision to designate the Russian LGBT Network as an “extremist” organization. The ruling paved the way for its members to be criminally prosecuted as a threat to the nation, following the Russian Supreme Court’s declaration in November 2023 that the so-called “international LGBT movement” is an “extremist organization.” Russia’s criminal code equates extremism with terrorism. The April ruling was one among nine this year that have designated LGBTQ+ rights organizations in Russia as “extremist,” according to Human Rights Watch.
