Julie Andrews at 90: the magical nanny with a sideline in the sly, sexy and subversive

ree

Britain’s practically perfect star enters her 10th decade today. To celebrate we look back over the remarkably rich, radical – and sometimes risqué – career of an actor best known for tucking up children in the mid 1960s

Dame Julie Andrews, so crisply accented, sweetly tuneful and girlish in her most famous movie musicals, has always had a sense of humour about her angelic image. She won the 1965 Oscar for playing a “practically perfect” English nanny for Walt Disney, but that didn’t stop her from driving around Los Angeles with a “Mary Poppins Was a Junkie” bumper sticker on her car

New research finds widespread misconceptions about the tea we drink

Story by Rebecca Speare-Cole

One in five British adults incorrectly assume the tea they consume is grown domestically, according to new research commissioned by Fairtrade. This finding has prompted the organisation to call for greater transparency from brands regarding the provenance of their products.

Personally I never thought any tea was grown domestically, it comes from India or China and is grown on great tea plantations, not domestically, so what bollocks is this ???

Starmer denies sheltering £320k donkey field from inheritance tax

Story by Dominic Penna, Fiona Parker

Sir Keir Starmer has denied sheltering from inheritance tax a £320,000 donkey field that he gave to his parents.

The Prime Minister bought the seven-acre plot of land in Oxted, Surrey for £20,000 in 1996, handing it to his parents who used it to look after neglected donkeys.

Sir Keir has denied a claim in the Sunday Times that he placed the field within a trust, meaning that its value was not included in his parents’ estate – which he benefited from – when they died.

Trump's rant to the UN was received in silence, not because of respect for its content, but the sad fact that they were listening to the ravings of a madman? If there's such a thing as a political padded cell he should be in it.

A police department in California grappled with this existential question last week.

Would you trust a driverless car to take you from A to B ?

Trump indeed was laughed at during his 2017 UN speech

but in September 2025 things got worse.

ree

It’s definitely not a laughing matter when the most powerful country in the world is totally at whims of a deranged old man set on personal vendettas.

“Your countries are going to hell!” told Trump to the stunned world leaders at the U.N. general assembly on Sep.24, 2025.

  • 46% of Trump’s 56-minute speech was dedicated to referencing himself and his administration.

  • Only 17% of Trump’s speech was actually about foreign policy: wars, NATO, and trade.

  • 11% was dedicated to illegal immigration.

  • 8% was dedicated to criticism of the U.N.

  • 7% was about the climate/green energy hoax.

  • 6% was about the U.S. domestic issues.

  • 3% was dedicated to Trump’s whining that he didn’t get the real estate deal to renovate the U.N. building in New York decades ago.

  • 1.7% was Trump’s complaints about the teleprompter not working (it was operated by Trump’s team) and escalator coming to a halt (i.e. turning into stairs) as one of his entourage accidentally tripped the safety switch, as Trump stepped on it.

ree

I think loud laughing would be totally appropriate — but the leaders gave Trump a polite round of applause, when he finished.

UK’s “Mirror” gave its verdict on the front page.

What the leaders were really thinking of Trump’s UN speech, we won’t know until they retire and publish their memoirs — probably, long after Trump is no longer in the White House.

Recently when buying something ' on line' and I discovered it was coming from the USA, I e mailed and cancelled the order and stated that as this was an American company, I was NOT willing to do business with them as long as they had Trump and his global destructive policies in pace and how sad I was to see how the USA was being flushed down the toilet by Trump and what a laughing stock the country now was on the world stage. I didn't get an answer but my order was cancelled. John Bellamy
