Shaftesbury hailed among the UK's prettiest winter spots

Shaftesbury is about a 45 minute drive from Hamilton Hall, still in the county of Dorset, and is where the old Hovis advert was filmed. Made to appear it was ' up north' it is actually here in the south. Hovis paid for all the houses to have any ariels or modern exterior fixtures to be ' hidden' so it looked old and original on camera and - it maintains that charachter to this day.

A "charming" Dorset town with "breathtaking views" and a "tranquil atmosphere" has been named among the UK's prettiest spots for winter.

Earlier this year, Shaftesbury, which is located in the northern part of the county, was featured alongside five others in a list from Fine & Country.

Discussing the list, the estate agency shared: "As winter firmly sets in in the UK, it is the perfect time of year to find your ideal location for relocating and getting cosy.

"Fine & Country has searched the UK to find a range of villages that are simply magical in the winter."

Why is Shaftesbury among the UK's prettiest winter spots?

Although Shaftesbury is referred to as a village in Fine & County's write-up when it is a town, its aesthetic qualities for the season were recognised.

The estate agency shared: "Shaftesbury, Dorset, is a charming winter village in the UK, renowned for its snow-dusted streets and the iconic Gold Hill, lined with historic, cobbled cottages.

"Perched atop a hill, it offers breathtaking views over the frost-kissed Blackmore Vale.

"Its welcoming pubs, restaurants, and boutique shops add to its appeal, creating a lively yet tranquil atmosphere."

Shaftesbury is also recognised for having a "fascinating history" by Visit Dorset, which goes back to Saxon times.

They added: "The town is the home of Gold Hill (made famous by the 'Hovis' advert) and has magnificent views over Thomas Hardy’s Blackmore Vale.

"It is the gateway to the South West from where you can tour the area from Stonehenge to the east to Bath and Bristol to the north and the Jurassic Coast to the south.

"The ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey and the Gold Hill Museum (Open April – October) are very popular together with the town’s many independent shops and Swan’s Yard, the creative heart of Shaftesbury."

The town is also known for its markets, which take place on Thursdays and Sundays, offering a variety of local produce as well as lovely pubs offering good beer and food with local produce.

The man came to sweep my chimney prior to the Christmas period.
