ZULU

When the 1964 film Zulu premiered, the daughters of decorated war hero Private Henry Hook walked out of the theater in disgust.

While the movie generated many misconceptions about the 1879 Battle of Rorke’s Drift—such as the myth that the 24th Regiment of Foot was entirely Welsh, or that the battle ended with a mutual singing contest and a respectful Zulu salute—the most egregious inaccuracy revolves around Hook's character.

In the film, Private Hook is depicted as a malingering, insubordinate, heavy-drinking thief. He is shown shirking his duties and is locked in the hospital guardroom as a prisoner, fighting only when the war violently bursts through the hospital doors. The movie uses him to provide a classic cinematic redemption arc: the scoundrel who unexpectedly rises to the occasion when his comrades need him most.

The reality of the historical Private Henry Hook could not be more different. Hook was a model soldier and a man of exceptional character. He was a Methodist lay preacher, a strict teetotaler who never touched alcohol, and a recipient of good conduct pay. He was not locked in the hospital as a prisoner; rather, he was deliberately assigned to guard it because his commanding officers considered him one of their most dependable, steady men.

During the intense combat at Rorke’s Drift, Hook’s actions were genuinely heroic, requiring no cinematic embellishment. As Zulu forces set fire to the hospital roof and broke into the rooms, Hook and a few others held them off in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Hook defended his post with a bayonet, buying enough time to physically knock holes through the interior clay walls and drag bedridden patients out to the safety of the main courtyard. For his astonishing bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

The filmmakers’ decision to alter a decorated war hero's personality simply for the sake of character development had real-world consequences for his surviving family. Today, military historians frequently highlight Hook's cinematic portrayal as a prime example of how the entertainment industry will readily sacrifice a real person's legacy to build a conventional narrative arc.

Did you see the film ? What did you think of it ? A very young Michael Caine.

ou make, and take, from the news that which you wish to see and hear. You observe what you want and comment of things that affect you personally. If you don't like something, do not read it and move on but do not shy away from what IS going on in the world of which - you are a part. World news is so easy to find these days and differing opinions not hard to find. Having an opinion is vital and being a ' don't care' person helps no one. So open your mind - open your heart - open your awareness and ALWAYS be open to new ideas.
