What’s wrong with Benny Hill? Review – a vivid reminder of what millions once found hilarious

Story by Brian Logan

TV has mined a rich seam of golden-age comedian biopics – but Benny Hill has yet to be afforded the posthumous privilege. That’s partly the point of this stab in that direction by Mark Carey, which asks why Hill has been so thoroughly expunged from our comedy pantheon. The reasons are widely known, of course, and rehearsed again here: the former best-loved man on television traded in a humour many modern viewers find sexist, racist and sad. One might hope for greater insight from a 100-minute play on the subject but, for all the pleasures along the way, it doesn’t have a great deal to add.

The ten strict rules Traitors stars must obey or risk being axed

Story by Shelley Spadoni

TV viewers seem to have Traitors on the brain at the moment - and there are ten very strict rules every star - whether they’re a Traitor or Faithful - must follow, or they risk getting the boot. The show, hosted by former Strictly presenter Claudia Winkleman, is a masterclass in the art of deception - and has had audiences gripped since the first series debuted in 2022. And the rules each contestant must follow, some on camera and some off, are very rigorous indeed.

The Traitors 2026 rich list: Their salaries show who really doesn’t need the prize money

For some of this year’s The Traitors contestants, the £120,000 prize pot is actually just a standard Tuesday at the office. While some are fighting for a life-changing sum to escape the retail grind, others are already sitting on high on the rich list, with six-figure salaries and impressive pensions back in the real world.

MPs erupt as nurse could be sacked in row after calling bearded sex offender 'Mr'

Story by Katie Harris

A cross-party group of MPs have urged the NHS to drop disciplinary action against a nurse suspended after misgendering a trans paedophile. Jennifer Melle, 40, is facing the sack following the incident in May 2023, when she called the 6-foot bearded sex offender "Mr". She told the patient: "Sorry I cannot refer to you as 'her' or 'she' as it's against my faith and Christian values, but I can call you by your name."

JB: Absolute madness... a man with a beard who hasn't made any effort to be a female but we have to buy into this bullshit and this insanity is taking over and when nurses - who we are short of in the UK - could get sacked, the insanity deepens.

Scientist compares Trump to Hitler: "Greenland marks the beginning of his downfall"

Story by Kathrine Frich

He challenged borders, dismissed diplomatic norms, and assumed rival powers would hesitate rather than confront him directly. Those early moves were not initially met with war, but with disbelief, accommodation, and delay. Only later did they come to be seen as warning signs of a much larger rupture.

Keir Starmer tried his best to charm Donald Trump - but America is no longer our friend

Story by Jonathan Walker

For as long as I can remember, America has been our friend and ally. President Ronnie Reagan and Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher freed the world from the tyranny of communism. Bill Clinton and Tony Blair were mates. And when the UK stood "shoulder to shoulder" with the US after 9-11 terror attacks in 2001, it was clearly the right thing to do - because we never doubted America would do the same for us.

The Golden Girls

Was a critically acclaimed American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 14, 1985, to May 9, 1992, running for seven seasons and 180 episodes. Created by Susan Harris, the show follows four mature, previously married women—three widows and one divorcée—sharing a house in Miami, Florida.

Main Characters and Premise

  • Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan): A man-hunting, Southern belle who owns the house.

  • Rose Nylund (Betty White): A naive, kind Norwegian-American from St. Olaf, Minnesota, known for her peculiar stories.

  • Dorothy Zbornak (Beatrice Arthur): A sarcastic, practical substitute teacher from Brooklyn.

  • Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty): Dorothy's 80-year-old mother, who moves in after her retirement home, Shady Pines, burns down.

The premise originated from an NBC skit featuring actresses spoofing Miami Vice (dubbed "Miami Nice"). The show was an immediate hit, often ranking in the top 10 for its seven-season run.

Themes and Legacy

  • Female Friendship:

  • The show centered on the camaraderie of four women navigating the "golden years" of their lives.

Controversial Issues: The series tackled topics rarely discussed on 1980s television, including HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ rights, ageism, homelessness, and menopause.

  • Awards: All four lead actresses won Emmy Awards for their performances, a rarity in television history.

  • Ending: The show ended in 1992 when Beatrice Arthur left, with her character, Dorothy, marrying Blanche's uncle, Lucas Hollingsworth, and moving to Atlanta.

The series has left a lasting legacy, continuing to find new audiences through syndication and streaming, and was followed by a one-season spin-off, The Golden Palace.
