Death of Britain's best high street: Locals accuse council of 'squeezing the life' out of town

Affectionately known as Bishy Road, the street had defied the malaise endured in towns across the country - with its traditional butchridays and Saturdays.READ MORE HERE

A two-hour stay now costs customers £9.70 - up from just £1.60, and rising to £10.60 on Fridays and Saturdays. Butchers, bakers, and greengrocers still to succumb to the scourge of vape shops and Turkish barbers ( often seen as venues designed to launder illegal drug money )

That was until officials at Labour-run City of York Council last month sanctioned a sweeping rise in parking charges - with the cost of an hour's parking hiked 506 per cent from 80p to £4.85, and £5.30 on Friday and Saturdays.

How the Royal Navy’s flagship £3.5bn aircraft carrier turned into a farce

With a deck the size of three football pitches, HMS Queen Elizabeth is Britain’s flagship aircraft carrier – a 65,000-ton floating airport designed to wage war anywhere on the planet. On its maiden world tour in 2021, when it cruised the Middle East and prowled the South China Sea, Whitehall hailed it as a new symbol of “Global Britain”

The rise of the 20pc restaurant tip – and why you should pay it

A double whammy of government policies have brought a struggling hospitality industry to its knees, and consumers will pay the price in the form of American-style tipping.

US-style tipping culture has crept into establishments where tips were never historically paid, such as cafes and pubs, while restaurants now routinely ask for tips of 20pc on top of a cover charge.

The seaside spot named Britain’s most obese town

USA Far-right judges rules that it’s totally legal to harass LGBTQ+ employees

It's just the judge's latest ruling against LGBTQ+ rights.

Anti-LGBTQ+ federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled that Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act doesn’t protect LGBTQ+ people from workplace discrimination — it only protects them from discriminatory termination. Kacsmaryk’s ruling contradicts the 2020 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, a case that classified anti-LGBTQ+ workplace discrimination as a form of sex-based harassment prohibited by Title VII.

Melania Trump statue removed from her hometown for second time

Police in Slovenia are investigating the disappearance of a bronze statue of first lady Melania Trump.

The life-size sculpture was sawed off and carried away from her hometown on Tuesday.

Unveiled in 2020 during president Donald Trump’s first term in office, the statue was placed near Sevnica in central Slovenia where Melanija Knavs was born in 1970.

'Been in the works for years': Trump busted over taking credit for deals that aren't his

The Washington Post reports White House claims of “the dealmaker in chief” securing more than $2 trillion in investment agreements during his Middle East tour this week appears exaggerated. Possibly, by a lot.

The administration announced $8.5 billion in projects involving Texas energy company McDermott, with one focused on Qatar’s liquefied natural gas expansion, for example. But the paper reports McDermott had already announced contracts for that initiative during former President Joe Biden’s administration as far back as 2023.

A BBC journalist has revealed how she unwittingly flew from Heathrow to Madrid under the wrong identity - and British Airways did not clock the mistake.

Catherine Snowdon said the airline insisted she had never boarded the plane to the Spanish capital on April 23, which created a 'potential security risk'.

My husband has Alzheimer’s. I’m an unpaid carer, but the NHS treats me like a benefit cheat

If you saw this job description:

“You will be on call round the clock, have little sleep. You’ll get no thanks, it’s unpaid and if you want time off, you have to pay for it yourself.”

Would you apply? I’ve been doing that job for seven years. My husband has Alzheimer’s and prostate cancer, and last year I wrote about my life as his carer.

Ruby Bridges: the six-year-old who defied a mob and desegregated her school

Imagine being branded a criminal for simply marching for love. That's the chilling reality facing Budapest Pride and Hungary's entire LGBT+ community right now.

In the last few days, things have only gotten worse. Right now, Hungary's government is pushing through a new law that puts LGBT+ organisations directly in the firing line. This bill gives the authorities the power to blacklist groups that receive support from abroad – even from the EU – just by calling them 'threats to sovereignty.'

Groups that make life safer for LGBT+ people could lose crucial funding overnight. Leaders will be forced to hand over personal information, face relentless investigations, and could be bankrupted with impossible fines. Even offering a safe space or basic support could be branded 'dangerous' under these new rules.

On 16 May, I joined Viktória Radványi from Budapest Pride in Brussels to sound the alarm directly to EU officials, but time is running out and we need your help – urgently! The registration deadline for Pride is 27 May. If the EU doesn't act now, Budapest Pride's 30th anniversary could become a crime scene. Pride organisers, volunteers, even supporters risk prosecution – not for harming anyone, but simply for gathering in public.

More than 18,000 people have already spoken out. Thank you! But we urgently need more voices before 27 May.

Time is running out. Don't wait.
