The biggest killer is not illegal drugs but a completely legal one - alcohol - and with no strategy to help curb this disasterous decline for many into alcoholism and death, some are attempting to change the governments mind.

Dear campaigner,

I am getting in touch with you from the Alcohol Health Alliance with an apology. As you may remember, you sent an email to your MP earlier this year, asking them to write to the Home Office Minister about a new alcohol strategy.

We use the platform DoGooder to make contacting MPs as easy as possible. Unfortunately, DoGooder told us recently that, due to technical issues between their and the Parliament’s servers, some emails to MPs were not delivered, including your email. We are very sorry about this situation. Finding out about this was a disappointment as we are so grateful to you and all our campaigners for taking the time to write to MPs about alcohol harm. We have taken steps to make sure we are informed about any technical issues as soon as they arise and have received assurances from DoGooder that the issue has now been fixed. Despite this setback, we know that our campaigning is making a difference. The Chancellor recently decided not to cut alcohol duty for the second time in a decade. This is a great step towards reducing alcohol harm, and a testament to our campaigners who have been calling for this for years. We can’t stop here, however, as more action is needed to tackle the damage, disease and death caused by alcohol. That’s why it’s important to make sure your MP still hears from you on alcohol harm. We are now calling on the Government to launch an independent review of alcohol harm, an approach that has been successful in bringing more action on illicit drugs and smoking.
